Very very poor indeed, BBC.
F1 commentary box team interaction has been ruined by the BBC.
Jonathan Legard was I now believe with BBC Radio. But even before I knew this, my observation during the first race was that Legard's voice and delivery is not suited for television.
Worse still the interaction of Martin Brundle with James Allen - which worked very well on ITV F1 - has been lost, and subsequently Brundle's delivery has suffered.
Allen was not perfect by any means - but he was a vast improvement over Walker, and streets ahead of Radio Head Legard.
In race 2, Legard has shown himself to be the new 'Murray Walker'. That is not a compliment. Too many errors, too out-of-step with what the viewer can see for her/himself. Obviously, such mistakes cannot be picked up on Radio - which is why Legard was better suited to non-visual medium of radio.
Absolutely inexplicable is the BBC - BBC! - engaged in the obvious and excrutiatingly bad on-the-job training of David Coultard and Eddie Jordan.
Firstly, Coultard is clearly out of his comfort zone, and most certainly not suited to commentary......even with the person in his ear telling him what to say next. Coultard's soft Scottish voice is fine for dinner party conversations - where no doubt he secured his BBC job - but utterly unsuitable to TV sport. Too much mumbling.
The evident competition between Coultard and Jordan - repeatedly contradicting each other's comments - is tedious for the viewers and is like watching an episode of The Apprentice where only one job is up for grabs (perhaps it is!).
Also, how much does the BBC pay the token woman - Lee McKenzie - for squeeking out half-a-dozen words each race!!? Did the BBC not realise that the drivers had got used to Louise Goodman's probing - but sometime too 'tabloid' - questions.
As for the new 'boy'....!!!!!!!????? 'Misplaced confidence' and 'networking' would have to describe his sudden appearance on F1. His 'style' is better suited to Blue Peter than to F1.
In conclusion, the BBC has demonstrated once again how only the BBC can ruin a perfectly good programme by 'fixing' something that wasn't broken.

Thanks Limiter for such a great post. I really did not want to agree with everyone else's comments about the poor coverage so far as I have been really looking forward to the BBC taking over from ITV.
After the last 2 races though I have to say that the only thing so far that in my opinion is better about the BBC F1 coverage is the fact there are no adverts!!
James Allen always annoyed me but compared to Jonathan Legard, he is brilliant. Legards voice and commentary style is boring to say the least. In fact he appears to bring the normally terrific Martin Brundle down to his level!! He obviously has no real interest in Formula One as he shows no real passion, so again in my opinion the BBC should get rid of him and get James Allen back.
As for the BBC's choice of anchorman, who on earth thought that Jake Humphrey would be up to the task. Well who ever it was they were very much mistaken. Formula One fans are not stupid or uneducated and therefore we do not need a patronising presenter that would be better placed on CBBC. Please can we have an adult that can control the likes of Mr Coulthard and Jordon.
Lee McKenzie apparently also works for the BBC F1 team. I say apparently as I have yet to hear anything of any importance from her. In fact I can't remember hearing anything from her. It is not her fault but surely the BBC must have seen the relationship that Louise Goodman had built with both the drivers and other important people in the F1 paddock over the years. Why then did they give the job to Liz McKenzie who the drivers or other team members obviously do not want to talk to. Come on BBC get Louise back in her race suit.
Finally I watched the British Touring Cars on ITV 4 this afternoon. It was great to see Steve Rider anchoring and Louise on the grid chatting with the drivers again. I think I would put up with the adverts to have the old ITV F1 team back. Lets hope the BBC listens to its viewers and makes the changes that need to be made.

Will somebody at the BBC please shoot this Jonathan Legard guy! He very obviously likes the sound of his own voice but has nothing of any interest to say and just likes to make a drama out of a crisis! Talk about over egging the pudding! His voice is not suited to televsion and is highly irritating. Shoot him before I end up shooting myself from sheer frustration!! Please let Martin Brundle do the majority of the commentary, he knows what he's talking about and knows what 'less is more' means. Jonathan Legard will you please SHUT UP!

That JONATHAN LEGARD is DULL, BORING and MONOTENOUS to listen to.
He is Unprofessional, totally Biased and unbelievably Ignorant about F1.
Whilst I like the NON-STOP viewing of BBC1, I prefer the commentary of ITV.

Please please shut Jonathan Legard up, he is ruining the coverage, he really does go on and on and on.....He comments and asks a question which is silly then corrects himself...Its getting on our nerves now....TELL him to just comment and chat to Brundall and NOT try and be technical....WE can see the TV and DO not need a Radio type description ofwhats happening.........
It would be fine for an radio/audio only but it's really bad for live TV coverage.....
PLEASE tell him we can see what's happening and adapt his commentary to that fact...
Thank God for Martin Brundall, what a brilliant knowledgeable ex racer commentator....

Well i have to say that along with many others i'm sure i breathed a sigh of relief to learn BBC were going to cover F1. However there were some reservations - who would cover it commentating. Well i have found Jonathan Legard has improved but still drops bricks - but lets face it so did Murray. He was awful to start with but he could carry another season. However without Martin Brundle it would be very poor and the addition of David Coulthard has also worked well - but please please please get rid of Eddy Jordan for next Season he adds nothing, is interested in only one thing (Eddy Jordan), and take for example this Suzuka weekend (besides forgetting where he was) I have no interest in him getting Ross Brawn to sing karaoke in the old Log Cabin after the race, but let me add i have a great deal of time and respect for Ross Brawn. I'll be honest i started off liking having Jordan on the team but that only lasted the first 2 grand prix - get rid of him BBC. All his references to "when it was my team" get on the nerves - face it Eddy it isn't your team now (Force India) and YOU left the sport. Eddy pushes himself at the cost of all others, considers he is the only one with a valid viewpoint, and DC is a minor player as far as he is concerned and he constantly has digs at him. I'm sure DC can stand up for himself but it shouldn't be necessary and doesn't make good TV. I have news for Jordan, F1 fans would rather hear about F1 racing from drivers - they know what they are talking about when it comes to what happens on the track etc a lot better than former team owners. Bye Eddy - i hope Mike

David and Martin are good Eddie? sorry he doesn,t offer much. Lee in the pits ?.more like IS the pits.... get Suzie from moto GP she,s the tops.

Neither of these commentators pay attention to what is on the screen. They ramble on with loads of tedious 'geeky' backroom drivel, and meanwhile we're struggling to identify who or what on earth we are looking at. I don't agree about Brundle being better than Legard. At least Legard's tone changes when sopmething important is happening. Brundle just drones on in the same monotone whether he's telling us about slipstreams and graining for the umpteenth time, or somone's about to cross the line and win a world championship. As far as the graphics go, at least we've got a lap timer this year at long last, albeit rather too late as the timing of the pit stops no longer comes into it in the way it did, but otherwise the rest of the graphics are worse than ever, and why are they at the bottom of the screen, where they're hidden by the pause graphic on my PVR whenever I pause the playback to read them? How daft is that!

Just a thought on the 'commentators' issues, Jordon, Irish, Team Owner (Ex). Coultard, Scottish, Driver (Ex). Never the twain should meet, but then again?. But my personal frustration is the 'Grid Walk!' it used to be fun seeing Brundle charging thru the mechanics, tv camermen/women,butting in to other interviews and getting reluctant drivers to "have a word", plus always falling over ( not difficult to )Bernie. But yesterdays was like a walk round the garage finding the odd driver trying to relax with all his 'helpers'? around, and spluttering over his drink when asked to answer a question I liked the bit when Eddy Jordon called accross to Webber to come over for an interview, but Webber tapped his wrist watch and walked on. The Intoduction music is crazy, the walk down the pit lane bonkers, " and behind us is the Mclaren garage of Jenson Button who is at the back getting ready for the race". iI's like a pantomime, "Their behind you!". Give Brundel back his old job of getting in the way,get rid of the pit lane walk, and show the lap counter larger, I can't see it from the kitchen when I am washing up.
